Temperature dependent gap anisotropy from interlayer tunneling

چکیده
A recent experiment by Ma and collaborators shows that the gap anisotropy in Bi 2 Sr 2 Ca 1 Cu 2 O 8+x is strongly temperature dependent. In particular , the superconducting gap along the Γ − M direction shows a weaker temperature dependence than the gap along the Γ − X direction which decreases rapidly with temperature. We explain this novel feature as a natural consequence of the interlayer tunneling mechanism of superconductivity.

Superconducting Gap within a Modified Interlayer Tunneling Model
A modified version of the interlayer tunneling model, including interlayer single particle hopping (ISPH), is considered as a phenomenological model to describe cuprate superconductors. The effective ISPH (teff ⊥ ) is taken along with a probability factor P , that involves the normal state pseudogap (Eg). This makes t eff ⊥ to mimic experimental observations that, ISPH is small in the underdope...
متن کاملec 1 99 8 An extended pair tunneling model : Studies on bilayer splitting and some superconducting state properties
We consider an extended version of the pair tunneling model including interlayer single particle hopping (ISPH) as a complementary process to pair tunneling. The normal state gap, as found in cuprates, is taken to suppress the effective ISPH in conformity with the experimental observations, and this in turn enhances the pair tunneling process. The effective ISPH involves a probability factor P ...
متن کاملEvidence for a finite temperature phase transition and phase competition in a bilayer 2D electron system
We study the Joshepson-like interlayer tunneling signature of the strongly correlated νT = 1 quantum Hall phase in bilayer two-dimensional electron systems as a function of the layer separation, temperature and interlayer charge imbalance. Our results offer strong evidence that a finite temperature phase transition separates the interlayer coherent phase from incoherent phases which lack strong...
متن کاملTunneling spectroscopy in small grains of superconducting MgB(2).
We report on tunneling spectroscopy experiments in small grains of the new binary intermetallic superconductor MgB(2). Experiments have been performed at 2.5 K using a low temperature scanning tunneling microscope. Good fit to the BCS model is obtained, with a gap value of 2 meV. In the framework of this model, this value should correspond to a surface critical temperature of 13.2 K. No evidenc...
متن کاملEffects of c-axis Hopping in the Interlayer Tunneling Model of High-Tc Layered Cuprates
We consider the interlayer pair-tunneling model for layered cuprates, including an effective single particle hopping along the c-axis. A phenomenological suppression of the c-axis hopping matrix element, by the pseudogap in cuprate superconductors, is incorporated. At optimal doping, quantities characteristic to the superconducting state, such as the transition temperature and the superconducti...
